Tirano, slow-living city, cultural crossroads.

Tirano

Tirano, a crossroads between Italy and Switzerland, is one of the treasures of the Valtellina: a city of art with many historic palazzos and churches, standing within the walls built by Ludovico il Moro, it is famous as the station from which the famous Bernina Express, the UNESCO heritage train line, departs.

A wonderful land to explore

In Tirano, the pace of life is slow: it looks to the future without forgetting tradition, culture and a taste for good food. It has succeeded in safeguarding its fine historic, artistic and natural features over time, and is still very much on a human scale. It welcomes you with its magnificent Basilica, the Valtellina’s finest example of Renaissance architecture. On the square outside the Basilica, the Folk Museum recounts the town’s rural roots, while if you look up you will see the small church of Saint Perpetua, an ancient pilgrims’ hospice, standing on a spur of rock. When you explore the narrow streets, small squares and fountains of the old town centre, the exquisite Palazzo Salis with its museum is particularly impressive. Tirano is surrounded by a lovely natural landscape of terraced vineyards and apple orchards and is rich in many typical products: from Valtellina wines to apples and many other gourmet specialities. A wonderful land to explore and visit. A town where life is good, a crossroads of beauty.
